One Nationwide survey found that over 18 million people meditate. They have discovered the secret of this ancient practice. This number is increasing rapidly.
So what’s the secret? Why should I meditate?
Here are 3 reasons you should meditate every day starting right now:
1. Calm Stress & Activate Higher Thinking. When we are stressed we activate our lower thinking brain that flips the switch in our mind that ACTIVATES OUR STRESS RESPONSE! Our body and mind go on “red alert” shutting down our non essential functions (digestion, immunity, sexual function) and redirecting all our energy to fight off the stress. This was fine thousands of years ago when saber tooth tigers were chasing us because when we escaped the tiger, our body and mind would relax again and we can go about our balanced calm day. Now in modern times, we activate our stress response from work, relationships, family, money, daily pressure and the list continues. We haven’t really learned how to turn off the red alert and find our calm natural state. That’s where meditation comes in. We are actually training the natural relaxation response already within us but seldom used. When we find our calm, we ACTIVATE OUR HIGHER THINKING RESPONSE! This part of our brain is where we find focus, creativity and innovation. When we activate this response, our higher brain lights up. You can even see this on brain scans as people meditate.
2. Improve our Learning & Enhance our Memory. Imagine being able to more quickly absorb, retain and recall information. When you meditate, you activate the parts of your brain responsible for these areas. You give your brain a boost! Meditation actually increases the gray matter in your brain increasing concentration, learning and memory.
3. Enjoy Better Relationships in Business and in Your Personal Life. You learn to be a better listener with more empathy. You are able to pause and take a moment to understand and appreciate your team. You become less reactive and more reflective and responsive. All from training your brain through meditation each day.
